What happened to Kabbalah?

VH1 has an "I Love the" marathon on, and 2004 is on right now. It brought up how for a while there all the celebrities were converting to kabala, buying the "special water" and wearing red strings on their wrists (which then led to the whole Kabbalah vs pro-ana string war). I remember at one point it was a huge deal that some movie had to be retouched frame by frame because of some actor who refused to take the string off.

Is it not trendy anymore? Did Madonna convert to something else, again? Wondering why it's not big news like it used to be when it was supposed to be the wave of the future of religion.

  • For one thing, Kabbalah is not a religion, it is a school of mystical thought in Judaism. You cannot convert to it without first becoming Jewish. In general, most Jews do not study Kabbalah and there are general restrictions on it if your are seriously devout and want to study it. (Like being male and over the age of 40.)

Second, like all trendy things, some still do what they were doing with it but it has faded into the background - kind of like a news story that is all over the front page, then a week or two later it has been replaced and additional stories are closer to the back.

  • What the Celebrities do, it isn't Kabbalah, it is something "Rav" Burg is doing to make money. There is no magic, no red strings, no holy water etc., etc., in Kabbalah. It isn't a religion.

There did use to be the restrictions on learning, but they have been lifted, Kabbalah is open to male, female, young and old, Jew or gentile (Some of the great Kabbalah scholars from the early centuries of C.E. were indeed gentiles).

If you are really interested in learning about authentic Kabbalah check out Bnei Baruch Education and research institute. There is a really good intro to Kabbalah video hereas well, definitely worth watching.

  • Yeah...what Madonna is doing, isn't Kabbalah. What Madonna is doing cost a lot of money from what I understand. Madonna's Kabbalah is based in an organization called the Kabbalah Centre run by Rabbi Burg and his wife. Mr. Burg claims to have  several Ph.Ds none of which he can provide proof for...none of his credentials are able to be proved. His wife is an astrologist. Their classes and sessions cost lots of money, their books...they sell special kabbalah candles, strings, water, things with magic words on them.

Kabbalah isn't a religion really, but things like astrology (which is in the Kabbalah Madonna is in, along with protection spells, red strings, holy waters, trances and such) are not in Kabbalah and are even forbidden.
