Is it teething?

I can't tell if my son is teething! He's 22 months and has always been an easy teether. lately he's been very drooly, cranky, and not sleeping well lately. I can't get my finger in his mouth to see if I feel any teeth coming down, but it seems like that's a good possibility. Do the molars have to decend before the actually cut through the gums? And if so, would that be causing him to drool and be cranky?
