What are your favorite healthy snacks for your kids?

I try to give ours a variety, but would like to see what others like to get some new ideas.

  • Any fruit (their favorite right now is apples because they can grab, wash, & eat). Whole grain crackers & cheese. Homemade muffins (with blueberries my aunt sent from Michigan - picked them herself, yum!). Dry cereal - Life, Quaker Oat Squares, Cheerios, Wheaties, etc (I don't buy the sugary cereals too often - maybe one box a month and it's gone in a day). Other crackers like Goldfish, Ritz, Club. Veggies & dip. Toast with peanut butter or homemade jam (made with very little sugar, go me!).

  • We try to avoid anything too high in fat or sodium. I like to give them reduced fat graham crackers with peanut butter or sliced fruit, yogurt with fresh fruit, apples with low fat caramel sauce, homemade lemon blueberry bread (I make it with promise spread in place of butter and sometimes add oatmeal into the flour mixture), frozen grapes in the summer time, reduced fat string cheese, fruit popsicles, reduced fat ritz crackers with peanut butter (we use simply Jif because its lower in sugars than regular peanut butter), homemade salsa with baked tortilla chips, bean and cheese nachos made on baked tortilla chips (heat a can of low fat or reduced fat refried beans mixed with juice of one lime and about 1/4 cup water and thicken. Spoon over baked tortilla chips, top with one ounce shredded sharp cheddar, shredded lettuce, and diced tomato). That is in the case of maybe a lunch or something more than a snack.

  • My boys love venison salami. It is very low in fat. There Dad hunts so we always have some on hand. They also Bruschetta and Margharita Pizza. We do the pizza on whole wheat soft tortillias with a little pesto, mozzarella and sliced tomatoes..broil them for just a few minutes.
