using qtips on a 9 and 1/2 month old?

i just wanted to ask this question.... i have a 9 month old that just turned 9 months on dec 18. and i was wondering after i give him a bath will it help reduce his risk of ear infection if i use a regular qtip to clean out his ears or ive heard other moms put alcohol on the qtip b4 they swab thier babys ears. c when i give him a bath and wash his hair he is difficult to rinse and i end up getting water in his ears. so what do u think?....

  • Do not use qtips to clean a child's ear unless it is just the outer part of the ear. Using Qtips pushes the wax further into the ear. Let nature do it's thing and natural push out the ear wax then use a damp washrag and wipe around the outer part of the ear. Also do not use alcohol as it dries up natural moisture that is needed in the ear canal.

  • Just use the towel over your finger to wipe out the outer ear. Ear infections are caused by bacteria, not by water getting in the ears. My kids have always had their ears full at bathtime but have had few ear infections. No Q-tips, no alcohol - you'd risk doing more damage by trying to keep them "clean". If you're really that worried about it, you can get waxy ear plugs like swimmers use, put those in baby's ears before bathtime and take out after, to keep water out.

  • The risk of an ear infection from water getting in them at bath time is pretty low anyway. It should come out on it's own, but you can hold a rag over it and tilt his head both ways to let any excess run out. A q-tip would often does more harm than good.

  • I use baby q-tips on my daughter whenever I can visibly see wax. They have thicker tips so they don't go all the way in her ear.

  • Only the outer part of the ear. Never stick a Qtip inside the child's ear. You can too easy break the ear drum and it in itself will cause an ear infection.

  • They sell Q-tips for kids they only go so far into the ear, I wouldn't use a regular one, and I def. wouldn't put no alcohol on it!!

  • i was always told never put anything smaller than your elbow into your ear!
i knew a woman who was obsessive about cleaning her kids ears. once she cleaned too deep and her child couldn't hear for two months! be careful!
