  • cereal has no nutritional value. It has added iron, which doesn't digest well and can cause some serious constipation. Start with mashed fruits and veggies - - it really doesn't matter which is first - their "sweet tooth" has already kicked into high gear if they are breastfeeding (it's sweeter than most first fruits!) and that has yet to stop a child from eating their veggies. 6 months is the earliest that solids should be introduced, but you should wait for baby's cues - they can sit up unassisted, they have lost their tongue-thrust reflex, and they are showing interest in your food - all three cues, not whichever comes first. Avocados do make a fabulous first meal, as anon. 11:07 said. And remember - most importantly - all food before 1 year is just for experimentation. They should be introduced 1 at a time with several days in between, and bottles/breastmilk should always be offered FIRST.

  • I have been hearing lately that rice cereal has no nutrition in it and now pedi's are recommending veggies first....not sure. I need to look that up. It was in my due date club board on here. I don't know if this is only true for babies over 6 months or what ?

  • rice cereal first. Make it thin at first. Then introduce a new food each week. Rule is veggies first, so they grow to like them. Cuz when they experience fruit, the sweetness will win over the tastebuds. Happy feedings

  • you can start her on it now, usually if the baby is healthy and likes eating and has teeth you can start it then. i started my son on oatmeal around 3 1/2 months bc he got a tooth. his doc said it was ok bc he was growing fine and developmently able to. every child is different though.

  • You can if you want to but you don't have to.

  • I have heard rice cereal really isn't that great for babies. Avacados w/ breastmilk is a better first food
