cereal has no nutritional value. It has added iron, which doesn't digest well and can cause some serious constipation. Start with mashed fruits and veggies - - it really doesn't matter which is first - their "sweet tooth" has already kicked into high gear if they are breastfeeding (it's sweeter than most first fruits!) and that has yet to stop a child from eating their veggies. 6 months is the earliest that solids should be introduced, but you should wait for baby's cues - they can sit up unassisted, they have lost their tongue-thrust reflex, and they are showing interest in your food - all three cues, not whichever comes first. Avocados do make a fabulous first meal, as anon. 11:07 said. And remember - most importantly - all food before 1 year is just for experimentation. They should be introduced 1 at a time with several days in between, and bottles/breastmilk should always be offered FIRST.
