When did your baby say his or her first word?

My daughter is 3 and half months old and I don't feel like she really talks or coos alot yet. She will laugh, but usually just observes most the time. I just want to make sure she isn't behind where she should be at this stage and I was wondering at what age they typically say their first word.

  • there is no typical. some start saying up to 8-10 words before they are 1. My daughter isn't talking much at all, actual words anyway, and she is 2. But she can follow instructions and understands everything mom and dad tell her, just refuses to verbalize her thoughts.

  • My baby didnt coo much either. He said his first mama around 7 months old. I dont remember the age when he started saying more than one word.....I think the age that your should worry is months. As long as she is holding her head up its fine.

  • All babies are different and all develop at different rates! My daughter said her first word (hi!!) at 7.5 months, and was speaking in complete sentences at 18 months.

  • My son said his first word ("muh" for milk) I think around 13 or 14 months. My daughter just said "dada" (and was obviously referring to my husband) the other day, and she's 8 months. One or two words are expected by a year, but it's really the repetition they look for (mama, dada, baba, etc.). Anywhere from 10-50 words is a "normal" vocabulary for an 18-month-old. So at 3 months, you have absolutely nothing to worry about yet. :)
