  • first off you need to make sure it's true insomnia and not just that you can't fall asleep easily.

go to bed and wake up at the same time everyday
make sure all lights and TV/radio are off when you go to bed.
drink a glass of milk before bed
don't take naps during the day
go sit in the sun for 30 minutes a day, in the morning

  • Make sure that you get enough exercise during the day, and get some fresh air too. When it's time for bed read a book for a little while to unwind rather than watching TV - recent studies say that the blue light given off from TV and other electronics can impair sleep.

Life style changes are the best way to remedy insomnia. I used to battle with it for a very long time (on and off since I was around 6 years old!). I couldn't fall asleep at night, if I did manage to fall asleep I'd wake up after only a short while and would not be able to sleep again. The result is walking around in a constant state of weary stupor. You're never really asleep and you're never really awake.

Exercise, proper diet, and a reliable schedule - just like you do to get your kids to sleep through the night! - is the best remedy. Pills just zonk you out, but never make you feel rested and they don't cure anything.
