Make sure that you get enough exercise during the day, and get some fresh air too. When it's time for bed read a book for a little while to unwind rather than watching TV - recent studies say that the blue light given off from TV and other electronics can impair sleep.
Life style changes are the best way to remedy insomnia. I used to battle with it for a very long time (on and off since I was around 6 years old!). I couldn't fall asleep at night, if I did manage to fall asleep I'd wake up after only a short while and would not be able to sleep again. The result is walking around in a constant state of weary stupor. You're never really asleep and you're never really awake.
Exercise, proper diet, and a reliable schedule - just like you do to get your kids to sleep through the night! - is the best remedy. Pills just zonk you out, but never make you feel rested and they don't cure anything.
