How Much does it cost for a lawyer

People keep telling me that it costs so much for a man to get a lawyer to help him establish paternity and set up visitation. Is it really that much for someone who has a decent job? Can anyone give me an guesses to how much a good lawyer would be in the state of michigan?

  • A good lawyer is about $250 per hour, and you will have to pay a retainer fee up front -- often to the tune of $2500-$5000. A parentage/divorce case may cost about $5-$10K when all is said and done. Try Neil Davis or Ellen Paynter in MI.

  • different lawyers cost different amounts - call your legal aid and they should be able to suggest some lawyers at a lower cost depending on your income.

You can also just call lawyers from the phone book - prices are set per law office. Lawyers who are higher in their company cost more and lower level lawyers who aren't partners cost less. And paralegals cost even less. Sometimes law firms with one lawyer cost less than a law firm with several lawyers.

Maybe too you have a law school near you that law students can help you.

  • Depends on the attorney and the case. I had to put down a $500 retainer and pay another $500 to do a termination of parental rights, that we lost. I am sure it would be more for custody or divorce. Paternity could be a couple thousand dollars.

  • Just remember you get what you pay for. DS got a crappy attorney and got a crappy settlement.
