What all do they test for when they test your baby for birth defects?

Just wondering, when they do the test to test your baby for birth defects what all are they testing for?

  • They normally give you the option to have it done or not. It is usually around 16 weeks and you just have to get s shot. I opted out for both of my pregnancies. They say there are a high # of false positives when doing this blood test...for me it wasn't worth the extra stress if it came back positive and nothing was wrong. They can also tell if there is something wrong when you go for your first sonogram about 18-20 weeks and if that is the case they send you back for another sonogram a little further down the line to see how things are doing.
