Filing taxes as a student

I'm not sure how to ask this question... but here goes. I was a student for fall term of 2009, and as such I received student loans. I was wondering, first of all, if I'm to file taxes, since I didn't work at all, but I did have student loans as income. Also, if I do file taxes, since I have four children, will I qualify for child tax credits? Thank you.
