food stamp question

I just received our EBT card in the mail. I have never had to use food stamps before and am kind of clueless. My husband and I have always worked but are both currently unemployed. What can I use the card for and what can I not? I know basic foods are okay, but what about soda, chips, snack foods, things like that? I'm not looking for anyone to bash me, I just want to know before I go into the store. Thanks

  • I believe you can get any food product, they are not like WIC checks for specific things

  • yes you can buy junk food on it. As long as it's consumable and not hot food from the deli you are ok

  • You can get any grocery product as long as it isn't premade (such as the chicken and stuff in the delis). And you can get any drink as long as there's no alcohol in it.

  • You can get any unprepared (I don't think you can buy the prepared foods from the bakery or deli?) food - but you can't buy paper products (napkins, toilet paper, etc) and I don't think you can use it for cleaning products either.

  • You can get any food item you want aside form the 'hot bar' at some stores. You can even get publix sandwiches! No paper or cleaning products, no diapers or wipes. No alcohol nor cig's.

  • Any food item except hot deli items and paper products is what we were told. So we can get goodies or soda, etc.

  • You can also use food stamps to purchase seeds for foods to grow, such as tomato seeds to grow when the weather turns warmer.

  • Yes, if you like to garden you can use them for seeds and plants to grow your own food. And I say, if you are both laid off, and have worked and payed into the system for yrs, go get yourself some Oreos and a big ole case of soda. It is there for you to use when you need help. I don't understand why people have to be such bitches about this subject. I sure as hell am not mean and self righteous enough to stand in the grocery line and tell some little one they don't deserve a Dorito in their lunch because their parents have it hard right now. Haters want to take out their frustration over those who abuse the system on every person who ever needed some temporary assistance. Sad really that so many think they are so above those less fortunate....hope people treat them the same way when they fall on hard times. Sheece~
