finishing the roof before getting it inspected....

so i majorly remodeled a house, tore off the roof and the whole upstairs and basically rebuilt it and the city told me i need to get an inspection and a permit before going ahead with the remodeling...

my question is...can i rebuild the roof and put on the shingles and all before i do the inspection or will they somehow know i rebuilt it before they came out?

  • It is illegal to do any remodling before getting a permit, which requires a inspection before you do so. If you remodel it before you get it inspected they will see that it's fresh. That's their job. They can tell how old jobs are. Do what the city asks you, so you don't get fined.

  • They'll be able to tell that it's new. Please follow procedure or you may have to rip off your brand new roof so they can inspect properly. Then, you get to pay to put it back on, and pay a fine.

  • Do the inspection, then replace the roof. Not only could you have to remove and re-replace the roof if you do it illegally, depending on the area you could face some hefty fines. When remodeling on that scale, always follow the rules. It will save you time, money, and frustration.

  • I work in the Building Department.. They will def. tell that you did the work without the permit. In Massachusetts what would happen would be that they would fine you double the permit fee amount for a roof. Other times I have seen them make you take down the building (shed/garag/fence) there is a reason why they make you get permits... Its called SAFETY!!!
