36 weeks pregnant with very soft cervix?

I went in for my 36 week appointment today. The doctor did an exam and said my cervix is very very soft. What does that mean? Does it just mean my body is preparing itself for labor?

  • yes it does. When he says either "soft" or "thin" it means that you have started to efface and typically are more than 50% effaced.

  • yes. i like this link. and i agree with pp that if he says you are soft he is talking about effacement. ;-) it's really normal to start effacing and dilating at the end of pregnancy.
