Umbilical Cord Care

My baby's dried cord just fell off. It looks disgusting...like a raisin! Should I continue cleaning it with alcohol?

  • there is no need to use alcohol. Just keep it clean with a dab of soap and plain water. The wee bit of soap on the outside helps to loosen the dried discharge so you can wipe it away. The plain water, otherwise, is sufficient for cleaning.

  • Just leave it alone! Why do people feel the need to clean and mess with what is perfectly fine? Just keep it clean and dry, it will heal up and look better in time.

  • They had to remove DD's umblical cord in the NICU so they could run IV's into her belly button. However, they told us to only give her sponge baths and to use a washcloth wipe gently at her belly button, with water only, until it healed completely.
