What is a word that describes this: "to set something off" (like an allergic reaction)?

For the life of me I cannot think of the word that I'm looking for.
What I'm trying to explain is a word describing an object that would set off symptoms of an allergy. I am not looking for the word allergen though. I mean a respiratory or skin allergy. Please help!!

  • Okay, I re-read and I think I understand better. Ignore previous comment. Um, irritant?

  • Well, if I'm understanding your question right (?), I always use the words "elicit" or "initiate" when describing an allergice reaction. Like, "The pollen elicits an allergic reaction in me". But I'm not exactly sure that is what your question is. Its a bit confusing.

  • Stressor? Honestly the only word that really comes to mind is allergen though.

  • I'm kind of asking for the word for the actual "stressor". I know it's kind of hard to understand, because it's hard to describe. I do like the word elicit!
