Aid to other countries...? (Not against aide to Haiti, just confused)

Why are we as a country so quick to come to the rescue of another country in crisis and yet we can't handle our own crisis? I mean how long did it take for aid to get to New Orleans? And then we sent foreign aid to us away? I'm glad we are in a position to help but why is it so hard for our country to help it's self if it's so easy for it to help others?

  • We have so much wealth in this country. Just take for example all the entertainers, and how much money they all make in a year. Add to that, bankers, corporations, self made millionares. Do you honestly think we as a society have any excuse at all to have any homeless people in our streets? An excuse to have just one child go to bed hungry? We have enough money to fix what is broken in America and then some. What is f'd up here is proprity. ME and MINE first! It is hard to swallow when there is so much wrong here, yet we run to the aid of others, but we are all human. I cannot get mad at helping those in need. But I can understand the frustration. I don't hold out much hope that we as a society will ever get our crap together.

  • seriously though, if anyone feels the people were put into their path from any source and in need of help, you should help anyone anyplace anytime. charity starts at home of course, but it's up to you to decide who is going to get your help.

  • cuz americans dont show much gratitue!! thats why. am not saying all americans are ungratefull but they want everything. people in poor countries are happy with anything. am sure those who were victims of katrina arent all up in arms about helping haiti, cuz they have been thru tragedy not as bad as haiti but life was still lost in both events.

  • I think she meant the United States help--we help other countries in less than 24 hours, but when we have a major, MAJOR disaster like after Katrina, we can't help ourselves for a week. And yes, other countries DID help, they offered aid, they even sent planeloads of food and water and doctors over and Bush and Co sent them away.

  • I think it's because we expect so much more. For Christmas that year our town had several family's who were living in the area and were put on the angel tree. These kids asked for the newest video game systems, Jordan tennis shoes, etc. They weren't content with asking for tennis shoes. Only a $100 pair would do. Needless to say many of them didn't get adopted that year for Christmas because of that. In Haiti if you sent down a used pair of tennis shoes they'd be thrilled. We're a spoiled nation.
