Health overhaul leaves gap for disabled workers

WASHINGTON – Disabled by chronic back pain and unable to afford medical insurance, Lea Walker hoped President Barack Obama's health care overhaul would close a coverage gap that has trapped her and millions of other workers.

It won't.

Although disabled workers can expect improvements, the legislation moving toward final passage in Congress doesn't deliver the clean fix that advocates for people with serious medical conditions hoped for. Some of the neediest could find themselves still in limbo.

The alternatives now in the legislation aren't exactly seamless. For example, a new insurance pool for high-risk cases that Obama asked Congress for could run out of money within a year or two of its inception.

Is this what we want? HCR that screws the disabled? Is this how we take care of our sick and injured?

  • Oh snap. Its a Yahoo link! Not some CRRAAAAAAAAZY fox news one...could the main stream media is be reporting on what REALLY going down? AWESOME! No this HCR is a big O load of BS and the people shoving it through KNOW it. Thats why there have been 2am votes, closed door purely partisan meetings, and the vote will happen within HOURS of consolidating these two bills you watch! All these folks whining "there is no bill yet so lets wait and see" are going to see how ridiculous that statement is, because when there IS a final draft WE wont get to see it till the deed is DONE.

  • LOL,momof! It's sad that something as vast as this bill, and expensive as this bill, will have gaps in it large enough to drive a elephant through.

  • had a feeling this would be ignored, wonder why?"

So yesterday another member began a question this way...and I HAD to laugh...REALLY?? It got responses from just about every regular that I could see. Yet you CAN NOT seem to get libs to answer these questions....maybe we should start beginning ANY question that directly questions policy THAT way :)

  • If you want a lib to answer you have to put HAITI somewhere in the question. How about this...."Haitians will NOT be covered by new health bill." Or "Even the elderly of Haiti will be denied care in the new health plan." Please don't get me wrong, I DO have a heart and it aches for those people. But, I can't fix the world. Anyhooooo...that's where those libs seem to be....!

OP, I think this is terrible! Isn't this one of the groups that they were supposedly targeting with their boo hoos? Flipping figures, the unions get a pass but the disabled get their medical equipment taxed and no insurance help...yet they will be REQUIRED to have it.

  • Good point, Special. I find it interesting after MONTHS of hearing how bad HCR is needed, many of the supporters ignore the fact that it won't help those who need it most.

  • Haiti is providing a needed distraction to the Dems.  People are so busy feeling sorry and sending off their $10 to Haiti that they haven't the time to peruse this bill.  And many libs on CM would rather ignore it than admit it is a fiasco.
