  • make frequent stops, or dont take the interstate so u can experience towns rather than just the same long road. dont stop at fast food places, go to mom and pop places and have a nice sit down breakfast, lunch or dinner.

  • I guess it depends on where you are going and what you actually like to do.

  • DH and I love to follow the brown informational signs or just look at each other and pick a strange road to follow. We pack plenty of snacks and just try to go with the flow. Pack clothing that you can layer. You can do books on tape. Pick discussion topics. Play license plate bingo. Stop and take hikes. Just have fun.

Now we have 3 kids and we do the same stuff, only accompanied by the eye rolls of 3 kiddos. They actually love it. We have seen more silly stuff in the past 3 years and I am in the planning stages of this years' explorations.

  • I would suggest that you request a FREE National Scenic Byways brochure ( and check out the routes you might want to take. The brochure will provide you with routes and great places to visit, hotels, places to eat, etc. There is a website too (

Then check out the Tourism website for each state you are visiting to get a copy of their local scenic byways. For example, I live in Idaho and this is our website - Check it out and see what you want to do!

    Most importantly, HAVE FUN!
