Hyphenate last name

Does anyone know if you can just hyphenate your kids last name or do you have to go through legal steps to do so? Like when my kid hits kindergarten... will they just let me hyphenate it?

  • NOPE. It has to be their legal name on all school records (in WA,) BUT you can ask for a 'preferred name' in the class room.

  • I have my own last name.
    My husband has his.
Our daughter's last name is hyphenated, mine and his.
That's how it appears on her birth certificate.

  • My mom wrote my name as hyphenated for school papers even though it wasn't legally.

  • Sorry, I think hyphenated last names are just plain stupid.
