can anyone tell me a low-cost way to preserve the color in my laundry?

I already make my own laundry detergent, so now I'd like to know what I can use to keep the color from fading in my laundry.

  • Vinegar doesn't have the most pleasant smell, but adding a cup to your washing machine will not only give you a natural fabric softener, but also help prevent colors from fading.

  • I always wash in cold water, and turn clothes inside out. It helps a lot to keep your jeans the same color as when you bought them longer.

  • Hang them dry. Seriously, the dryer literally eats your clothes (you know all that lint in the catch? Yup, that's your clothes slowly being shredded) and overdrying will break down the dyes, causing the colors to fade.
