Out of curiosity

At what age did you introduce cereal, water, and baby foods to your baby? My son was around 10 or 11 weeks when he first got cereal, but the WIC office told me 4-6 months; they prefer six months. Six months seems awfully old to just get breast milk/formula, but I'm sure they know better... So I was wondering when you started giving your baby something other then milk....

  • Both my boys started solids around 7-8 months. They were exclusively breastfed until then, and solids didn't make up any actual part of their diets until closer to a year. Babies can go the entire 12 months on milk alone, solids are just for practice until then.

With both, we started with table food... fruits and soft-steamed veggies they could feed themselves... so, never did cereal or baby food at all. Both started drinking water around 10-11 months.

6 months is the minimum recommended age for solids. Their digestive systems aren't ready before that.

  • Six months or later and I only did cereal with my first because I didn't know much about caring for infants. Your child's digestive track is not mature enough to process foods before six months. Cereals given to newborns to make them sleep at night sit heavy in their intestines, unable to be digested and starving the child of the nutrition it really needs.

  • not before any of them were 10 months- both of my boys looked like the HULK on breast alone!

  • #1 had cereal around 4 months - BAD tummy reactions and constipation and just miserable. stopped immediately and waited til she was 6months. with MUCH BETTER results.

didn't even try with #2 and 3 til they were 6 months.

water - when they were 10-11 months but a tiny bit definitely not a full bottle.

  • Water - about 8 months
Cereal - briefly at six months, then again around two
Baby food - never; we pureed what ever vegetables or fruits we had in the house.

  • Babies don't NEED anything besides breastmilk before age 1. However I started offering my daughter cereal/stage 1 foods at 6 months....I just wanted to get her used to the idea, I wasn't concerned if she ate them or not. She's 8 months now and enjoys eating baby food most of the time - I offer it to her 2 or 3 times per day.

  • Actually they don't need anything except breast milk up to 12 months. Formula you should start supplementing with food around 6-9 months. Personally mine didn't want anything until they were about 9 months old.
