Bedtime- hours of sleep

Is it okay that my 6 and 3 year old only get eight hours of sleep?

I know about ten is recommended. What is the norm for your kids?

  • I was just thinking about this the other day myself. My 10 yr old gets 9 hours of sleep a night.

  • honestly that doest sound like a lot so they go to bed at 10 and wake up at 6? or do they wake realllly early in the morning? mine are 5 and 1.5 and the 5 year old still takes naps on the weekends! she is pooped out by 6 and needs about 40 minute nap to make it through the day! on school days she wakes at 630 and is in bed by 8 sometimes 730 if she is really tired. do they not seem tired or irritated??? mine would be bonkers on only 8 hours lol!

  • Our boys go to bed by 8pm and are up at 6:30, that's 10 1/2 hours and they are wiped out at night when they go to bed... They used to sleep 12-14 hours of sleep before they started school.. IMO 8 hours isn't enough.

  • My 8, 10, and 12 year olds go to bed at 8:30 and get up at 7, so that's at least 10 hours of sleep - and they need that much! My 14 month old sleeps for 12 hours.
    I would ask your pediatrician. I'm sure there's a reason that more than 8 hours is suggested for kids, but I don't know what "harm" there would be in less sleep.

  • I know that they NEED more.
    The problem is that I just started Grad school. So we are out later in the evenings and have to get up earlier in the mornings so that I can go to work.
    Now they get to sleep from 9 to 6 which is 9 hours. I do think it is affecting their behavior and I feel awful. But what do I do- quit school? I'm a single mom.
