A little homework help..

How would you interpret this:

All causes, social and natural, combine to make it unlikely that women should be collectively rebellious to the power of men. They are so far in a position different from all other subject classes, that their masters require something more from them tan actural service. Men do not want solely the obedience of women, they want their sentiments.

  • I think: of course men want our "sentiments." it's no shock and horror that they're interested in a woman's love and emotional involvement. If they didn't, they'd all be gay and feel very indifferent to their mothers and sisters (which would make for a very strange world indeed).

    As far as women collectively rebelling or men being "our masters" I think that's going to depend entirely on a culture and time period. In the U.S we have had women's movements against men...in fact I think many women here have taken it too far to the point of utterly demonizing men, and/or considering them useless.
