How long did it take your child to walk independently...

after they began standing on their own? My daughter is 14.5 months old now and has been standing alone more and more nowadays. Her balance within these past few weeks has gotten significantly better and it looks as if she's soooo close to walking on her own. She loves walking while holding onto me or my husband's fingers, but she doesn't quite seem to have the confidence needed to walk on her own yet. I know she definitely has the ability to though.

  • all kids are different. i think anywhere between 9 and 18 months is considered normal. both my children started trying at 9 months then had it down around 10 months. you can always ask the doc but from the sounds of it, she will be starting soon!

  • My dd took her first steps at 9mos after about a month of her standing on her own. A couple days after those steps she started only holding my fingers to walk. I got her to walk independently again by holding my fingers just out of her reach getting her to take a couple steps to get my fingers. She was nervous so I just kept encouraging her and letting her knowi wasn't leaving.

  • My son was about 7 months old when he was standing on his own unsupported, he really took off at about 8 1/2 months old, but all kids are different, his doctor told me that he was starting really early. Sounds like your daughter will take off soon.

  • Actually could stand forever alone at 9 months...refused to even try to walk until 14 months. LOL He finally did start walking at 15/16 months.

  • My son starting walking about a week after he stood on his own, at nine months. Then my daughter was standing at 8 months, would cruise around everywhere around 9-10 months, but until 14 months, had only tried one or two steps alone. Then at 14.5 months, she just took off. My nephew didn't crawl until he was a year old. Then he started crawling, then walking the next day. He pretty much skipped crawling, but everyone was worried he was disabled or something. He was just a slow starter. My daughter will be 2 in a couple weeks, and now she runs everywhere. She was late to start, but it hasn't impacted her when compared to the mobility of other kids her age.
