How do you get your kid to keep their socks on?

My 13 month old won't wear socks for ANYTHING. She isn't walking yet, so I don't want to put her in shoes 24/7. I'm at my wits end, her feet are always freezing cold. I'm not going to put footy pajamas on her all the time, because those are for sleeping. People use duct tape for diapers...what do you use for socks?

  • Generally, you cant do a thing. My kids never like having socks on. My preschool age kids take them off in the car, in the store even if I don't stop them!

  • If you figure that out let me know. I just always left my kids alone. If there toes were cold I just put them back on. I was doing it alot but that is really all you can do.

  • We went thru this recently. My son is 14 months - we just kept putting them back on and now he leaves them on. I did find that he will keep on cheap socks from Target easier than ones from Old Navy or BabyGap - i don't know why, they just feel better to him. And he likes athletic socks as opposed to thinner socks, which I thought was strange, but maybe they're softer? Try some different types of socks and see if it makes a difference, and just keep putting them back on.
But on really cold days when we aren't going anywhere - yeah, he stays in his footed pjs!

  • OR - you could let her pick out a pair of bedroom slippers - the kind with the funny heads on them and see if she'll keep those on? It'll definitely work when she's a little older, might work now.

  • Yea, my DD won't keep hers on either. Slippers work a lot of the time with her, though. Try that.

  • Yeah, we got some Old Navy ones for Christmas. I tried putting them on her today, and every time she'd sit down she would pull them right off and then get mad at ME because she couldn't put them back on lol!

  • sock suspenders! lol j/k My daughter doesn't take off her socks, but she does take off her shoes. The slippers sound like a great idea.

  • I don't think they really need the socks. If they get cold enough they will keep them on, but obviously the cold feet aren't bothering your child.

  • Unless there is a risk of frostbite, the socks are unnecessary

  • My 8 month olds won't either. Unless there is risk of frostbite, or it is really cold (at which point they'll be wearing shoes anyway) I just give up. Otherwise the socks usualy end up in their mouths.
