did my husband do something wrong filing our taxes REDICULOUSLY low return

We made about the same amount last year as this year. Our baby isn't born yet, so no dependents. Nobody can claim either of us as a dependent and he claims 0. We did move, but it is into another apartment which we rent, we have never owned. All property is the same. Last year we got a 3,000 return. This year it is 300. What gives?

We are about to have a baby, so that bug return again (which we were expecting), would have been really nice.

  • Could either of you not withheld the same amount from your pay as you did before? Or could he have missed a 0 somewhere to make it different by a 0. I would look over it again before the final filing. Turbo tax online is 15 bucks and is so easy to do.

  • Yeah, Turbo Tax is what we use.

  • He most likely entered too many 0's or not enough in certain areas. go double check all the income and tax questions to make sure.

  • Are your total taxes paid much more than last year?

Your husband may have adjusted his withholdings to prevent the government from using your money without paying you interest.

  • oh yes he needs to look again. i barely made any money, less than 3,000 and filed no dependants and i am getting back 400 with the new make work pay and i got EIC without a dependant (only a little bit)

  • Those " tax breaks" are now having to be paid back by a lot of people. That may be what is up. We didnt get ANY of those " tax breaks" not even the extra in the check so we are getting 5,911 back. IF we would had got those " tax breaks" we would had most likely had to owe or got a very small return.
Those " tax breaks" are going to mess a lot of people up this year.
