What age can babies have a little water?

I have a 6 month old and he has a 4oz bottle of formula every 2 hours and then he gets cereal and applesauce once a day too, but I was wondering at what age can they have a little water?

  • You can introduce a sippy with water now... he doesn't actually need any extra water though, so it's just for learning.

  • I wouldn't suggest a baby having water until theyre old enough to have baby food for nutritional reasons. It is just going to fill their little tummy up with water that has no vitamins or minerals, so I personally would not do it.

  • He eats and within 30 - 60 min somtimes he gets cranky like he's hungry again. Don't babies just get thirsty?

  • They don't need water to quench their thirst - they are having liquid formula, and then foods with a lot of water content in them as well. But you can introduce a sippy cup with a few ounces of water at 6 months to let them practice.

  • I don't mean to be rude but why do you feed a 6 month old every 2 hours? You must be exhausted. He/she should be on a 4 hour schedule by now. Have you tried giving 6 ounces further apart? Sorry if this is none of my business... Also my pediatrician said that they get enough water in their formula, they're not thirsty.

  • I always start giving my babies a little bit of water in a sippy cup when they start solids (6mos).
