Preemie milestones? Up-to-date?

My son was born exactly one month early of his due date. We've been wondering if we should be checking his milestone marks as of his due date or his birth date to see if he's on track.

He's already babbling away, and he's 3 1/2 months old. We're having a bit of a struggle with trying to roll over due to his 'wry neck' problem, but with his therapy it shouldn't be a problem.

Anyone have an idea if I should be considering him more of a 2 1/2 month old as far as development milestones instead of his actual 3 1/2 months?

  • I went with real age for my twins, who were born 7 weeks prematurely. But by the time they were 8 months, they were caught up milestone wise with other 8 month old who weren't premature. (size wise also)

  • yes, for a premie you should look for milestones based on the expected due date, not the birthdate, so if he is actually 3 1/2 mos but was a month early you should look for 2 1/2 mo old milestones

  • My son was 5 weeks early. I guess he hit some milestones a little late compared to some but still fell in the average timeline. We never went by adjusted age, just his real age.

  • You go by the due date when looking at milestones for the first couple of years.
