i have this pain in the back of leg, blood clot?

i have this pain on my leg and it feels like it's right above my calf muscle. i wouldn't think anything of it except that the pain was there since yesterday. i heard that smoking while on birth control could cause blood clots and i broke down and had a cigarette yesterday (the first time in a whole 2 years!) and now i'm super worried. how do i know if it's a blood clot or not? if it is what should i do?

  • look up Homan's sign (an assesment to see if possible DVT), but be careful with it - only do it to the point you are comfortable. If it's warm to touch, any change in color, and don't see quite as much hair growing on that leg (this would happen a little later, not after only a day though). They will put you on anticoagulants (blood thinner) and you'll have a different diet also. Go see a doctor if either it continues or even if you just want to be checked - it can't hurt. In the meantime don't cross your legs, don't wear constricting clothing, and elevate your legs when you feel the pain/sitting down. Good luck!

  • You know that we are going to say see a doctor.
That being said, people can get blood clots even if they don't smoke or take b.c. Smoking one cigarette while on b.c. is NOT going to cause a blood clot the next day.

  • Is it hot to the touch and like a raised lump? If not you are probably fine.
