My uncle just passed away last night and my husband and I are trying to see if we will have the money to make it down there for the funeral. So im just wondering If more then likely I at least have till Friday to come up with the money. I have only been to two funerals but it was a while ago so does any one know how long after someone passes that they have there funeral?

  • It's different for every family.
My Husband's Grandpa passed away on January 20th and they had a funeral for him on the 25th.

  • It seems like it is usually about 4-5 days unless the family members making the arrangements know that there are people traveling from out of state then it can be held off.

  • Open casket? It happens quickly.
Cremation? Could be when ever they plan it.

  • As everyone else said, 4 to 5 days, sometimes even 3 days. Our neighbor's husband passed away and they didn't have the funeral for a month. They had to file papers and get approved by the state to wait that long to burry his body. He died a few days before Christmas and didn't want to have the funeral at the same time as Christmas.

  • Within a week is usually the standard amount of time. Sometimes the funeral may be held up to 2 weeks later but that is in special circumstances (such as the person passed away in a different state and had to be transferred back to the home state). If the person that passed away had already made their funeral arrangments prior to their death then the funeral could be sooner than the usual 4-5 days.

  • It costs money to wait. They charge you storage fees (dont think that is what they call it though). So they usually have them as quickly as they can get everyone together. Once a family member of my husband's family died & we asked them if they could wait an extra day because he was having a hard time getting off work & they couldnt do it because it would have costed them more.

  • If it's an expected death, the funeral is usually 3 to 5 days after the death. If it's unexpected, the funeral will often be a week or more. Some are planned differently depending on the wishes of the deceased.
