  • Is this freshly pumped milk? The milk in your breasts cannot go bad or get sour. It may just taste/smell/look different due to what you ate.
Milk that has been frozen and thawed and smells sour could be due to lipase breaking down the milk.

  • If the milk came straight from you, the milk is fine. Milk can't sour when in your breasts. The change probably came from your diet and it's really nothing to worry about, it still has all of the same wonderful bennefits that all breast milk does. Your baby, however, may reject the strange taste, if (s)he does then put him/her to the breast so (s)he can see that what they are getting from the bottle is, indeed breast milk. Your baby probably is used to this occasional flavor variation and won't be phased.

  • It may be lipase, and it doesn't mean that your milk has gone bad, it's just an enzyme that some moms have more of than others. It gives the milk a funny smell, but doesn't hurt it at all. As long as your baby will drink it, there is no problem. You can scald it before refrigerating it (heat it to just less than boiling and then let it cool), and that can sometimes help with the problem. I have had this issue in varying degrees with all 4 of my kids, and they're just fine!
