How do I get my son to stop smacking when hes mad?

Im trying to find ways to discipline that dont involve spanking or constantly saying no. Im afraid spanking will just teach him you hit when you get mad and being told no gets tuned out to often. Im trying to divert his attention or explain why its wrong, which is very hard to do to a 20 month old.

  • They learn what they live so set the example for him. Ignore bad behavior and praise good behavior. If bad behavior is out of control then distract them with playtime. Spanking is punishment and not discipline so that's ineffective in teaching him anything except that hitting is ok. No is just another blah blah blah sound to him. He has no clue as to the concept of what it really means so don't waste your breath. Explaining to a 20 month old is also a waste of breath. He simply doesn't understand what you are trying to convey to him. I think distracting/diverting his attention is the key and teach him how to act by example.
