medicine for 17 month old

my son is 17 months old and has a runny nose and a cough. i remember when he was younger the doctor said theres nothing u can do but to let the cold run its course and now when i look for medicine at the store all of its for ages 2 and up. does anyone know of anything i can do or give to him to help his cold or is he still too young to take anything?

  • well my daughter gets prescribed C-Phen DM from her pediatrician.....she is 19 months but she has been prescribed that since she was like 1yo whenever she gets a runny nose....
    Now over the counter i dont think there is anything

  • Even the two and up stuff is no good... there have been studies done that cough and cold meds really aren't safe until after age 6. But humidifiers actually help loosen stuff up and shorten the life of a cold... that's not doing nothing. Get a humidifier (just water, no vicks) and saline drops if you can get them in. That stuff does far more than a cold medicine does... for adults, too.

  • Saline solution works good for the nose...but it's like trying to cut a cat's claws once they realize how gross it feels....

  • Saline drops in the nose, let him sit in a steamy bathroom, using a vaporizer at night or Vick's baby rub. That's about it.
