  • "marijuana will continue to leach out of the mothers' adipose tissue for weeks, but those levels in milk are probably subclinical and would not bother "neuropsychologically" an infant.

They would make the infant drug-screen-positive...but this doesn't mean levels are even close to 'clinical'. Remember, you can smoke marijuana, have clinical ranges for a few hours, but the adipose tissue is filled with marijuana and will leak this out for many days...even though it has NO clinical effect on the individual.

And yes, the infant will be drug-screen-positive...but this doesn't mean the infant is having clinical effects from the drug at all.

It is safe to breastfeed 24 hours after exposure to marijuana. Yes, the infant will get nanoquantities of THC, but it will not have a clinical effect on the infant.

  • Pumping and dumping will not "get rid of it". It will leave the milk the same time/way it leaves the bloodstream. She needs to pump and dump to maintain her milk supply until she breastfeeds again.

  • Is there already a child services case open on her where they are monitoring her and the baby? If not, no one is just going to randomly knock on her door and ask for a blood sample from the baby. It would be very unusual for them to yank the baby on an allegation alone, they really can't do that without evidence she was harming or a danger to the baby.
Tell her to get her act together, pump and dump for 24 hours, and then stay home with that baby!!! Who goes out to a party and leaves their baby home when baby is a week old? Stop kicking yourself and learn from this mistake and reevaluate what is important. This baby will only be tiny for a few months, you have the rest of your life to party. Your baby needs you and you need to put your baby first!
