  • Depends on area, denomination, and size of the church. Generally in protestant denoms, the pastor gets paid out of the member tithe. The more members put in, the more the pastor *could* be paid. Example: DH is a youth minister for a small country church. They pay the pastor a living expense b/c he lives in town, the music minister gets about $150/ month, and we get to live in a church parsonage rent-free, but DH no longer receives the $ 100/ month we got before moving into the parsonage. Conversely, we knew another YM and his wife and child who worked at a larger church-he got $ 1400/ month, the senior pastor was paid significantly, and so were the rest of the church employees. That church did not have a parsonage.

  • Also, in protestant denominations, it is common for the pastr and other ministers to be "bi-vocational"- two jobs (or more) to make ends meet. The head pastor where we work is lucky in that he can devote all his time to the church because his wife is an er nurse and makes a good enough income to cover what isn't covered by the living expense. His case is rare, though, for a protestant denomination. I couldn't tell you how every church pays their ministers b/c it does vary. Presbyterians pay for schooling, place the minister in a church and find him a home. Baptists (which is what we are) rarely do anything beyond write the check and maybe offer a parsonage to live in. It all depends.

  • Our annual budget for salaries is $150k: a pastor, a choir director, a secretary, a child care director, and a pianist.

  • Depends on the area of the country they are in, the church (denomination and size). I don't believe there is an 'average' pay.
To the one who stated: 'sooo nice that pastor gets all that money when there are starving people in the world'
First off, most pastors I know, also tithe- they give back to the church- and also probably give to charities. Most of them just do not keep it all for themselves. And what about everyone else who makes lots of money? Why is it pastors who are just picked on for making money?? Most people don't work for free.
