How does the Mirena IUD work?

Why do some people say it causes abortions? I mean, how is that even possible? I thought is was supposed to keep you from getting pregnant.

  • It allows an egg to be fertilized - which is the beginnings of a baby. But it irritates the uterus so that the fertilized egg can't implant - therefore the fertilized egg (zygote? can't remember the name of it) is passed from the body, essentially a super-early abortion. You ovulate like normal with those, unlike the pill which doesn't allow ovulation.
