car seats and expiration dates

ok so i recently found out that car seats have expiration dates. wow so i looked at all the car seats i have and all but the new one i have is expired. so what do i do with the expired car seats? would this be a recycling item or just dumped in the garbage?

  • You could take them to babies r us for the great trade in event- it ends next week, but when you trade them in, you get 25% off the purchase of a different car seat.

  • i don't think all of the components are recyclable (they have foam and stuff in them too), so i just put mine in the trash

  • Before putting it out with the trash, dismantle the seat. Cut the straps, take the cover off, write "DO NOT USE" on the plastic shell with permanent marker, even smashing it up a bit is recommended. You don't want someone to come take it and think it's OK to use it.

  • Along with the Babies R Us thing most fire stations/police stations have car seat safety checks and if you take your seats there and they are expired they will give you a new one for free (usually not a real nice one, but it's free). Another option if you can't afford to buy new seats. That is what we did with our old seats to get seats for the second car that the kids rarely ride in. If you do just throw them away it is recommended that you take out the straps and dismantle it as much as possible to stop others from taking it and using it.

  • I would for sure bring them in for a trade in at Babies R Us if you are looking at needing new seats...
Otherwise destroy them so no one can use it again. Cut and remove the straps, write damaged and do not use all over it, even take a sledge hammer to it. People are nuts and will pick them out of the garbage and use them if they think they can save a buck!

  • sledge hammer so no one else uses and trash... I recycle everything else so I dont worry about a car seat here and there as trashing that may save a life.
