what does it mean im 16 weeks gestation?

my doctor says im 16 weeks pregnant but what does gestation mean? im really confused about that. does it really mean that im 16 weeks or what? when i had an ultrasound done at the doctors office i asked the ultrasound technician said i was 16 weeks by looking at the baby. i really think im further along because i can feel the baby kicking for sure. and alot of people say its too early and they only felt the fluttering.. soo im confused.

  • you're baby is 16 weeks old in your tummy. if you honestly feel the baby move, then believe YOURSELF, nobody else has that little love bug in their tummy so they can NOT EVER tell you how YOU feel. I felt my second baby very early like that too...maybe not actual KICKS but definite movement....what you think might be a kick is just baby bouncing off walls lol. congrats

  • they say gestational age is 16 weeks, and that means that they are guessing you conceived about 14 weeks ago, because gestational age starts from the last menstrual period. if your cycles are "average", conception would be 2 weeks after the last period. but it sounds like they are dating your pregnancy by ultrasound, and so guessing that your baby's fetal age is 14 weeks. they always had 2 weeks to the fetal age and say you are 16 weeks gestation. i hope that makes sense!!!

it's also always possible that they are off by several days on their "guess"

lots of moms DO feel movements at 16 weeks, although it's more common to start feeling them around 18-21 weeks i think. with my first pregnancy, i started feeling movements around 20 weeks, and w/ my 2nd around 17 weeks.

you can try googling fetal age and gestational age and that might help. either way, if anyone asks how far along you are, you would go by gestation, ....

  • Your baby is NOT 16 weeks old in your tummy. Dating is based on your last menstrual period and you typically ovulate 2 weeks AFTER that and that is when you conceive so your baby is 14 weeks old, but most people say 16 weeks pregnant since that is how things are dated. Personally trust what you feel and who cares what others think. It really depends on how the baby is sitting how much you feel them kicking. At 16 weeks it is typically a flutter and that is it, but that doesn't mean it is for you. Leave the due date and timing alone and just have fun being pregnant.
