Exclusively breastfed, on daily antibiotics for kidney condition and...

his poop has changed. Its been smelling more and more and now it smells so bad. He used to have literally no smell to his poop before I had to start a daily antibiotic regimen. Has anyone else been through this situation. He has hydronephrosis and urinary reflux if you want to know exactly why he has to be on a low dose antibiotic daily. Again he is only breastfed right now just turned 6 months. I will be starting solids this week but thinking that will make his poop even worse =(.

  • Poop is supposed to smell. That is what happens as they get older. His antibiotic is probably contributing to that.

  • Is he having trouble with the poop? I wouldn't stress about it if he's still pooping regularly, you know?

  • The bacteria in his gut have probably changed due to the antibiotic. Taking a pro-biotic with an antibiotic is useless. The med just kills the probiotic in most cases. Breast milk is also giving him way more probiotics than you could ever get from a supplement. If he really needs the antibiotic, the best you can do is keep giving him breast milk.

If the stools are a problem for him (discomfort, dehydration, etc) then discuss a different antibiotic with the doctor. But if it's just smell, it's something you'll have to tolerate for his kidneys.

  • Yea i give him an infant probiotic too but I see its probably doing something because he had thrush of the tongue until i started to give him the probiotic on top of it and now its gone. But im sure his gut has changed due to the medications and they had to switch him a few times hes sensitive to many antibiotics it was a lot of trial and error before we found one that he tolerates. He is pooping normal in color and amount.
