Section 8?

I live in Texas and I was wondering how soon can I get on section 8. I'm close to not having anywhere to stay and I was wondering do they give emergency assistance? What are the requirements because I'm going to need this until I can get on my feet. It's my last resort.

  • A woman shelter is what I would recommend too. Some lady was talking to us about them when I was going to school for medical assistance. I know churches help pay your rent too all you do have to is show proof you are so far behind and especially since you just had a baby my uncle girlfriend went to a church. But she stay in Houston. If you stay in Houston I could get the number for you. They actually give you alot of assistance while you are pregnant because they don't want people getting abortions. Like I said if you are in Houston I can get there number and you can talk to them. Have you ever applied for TANF? They give cash assistance

  • i have a friend that applied and was waiting for over 2 yrs she finally went to a womens shelter and they got her and her 3 kids in housing within 4 months. I try telling my sister to go to a shelter all the time because you can get help so much faster but some people think they are too good. My sister says she is not that helpless. It makes me sick her saying that.

  • ...my sister is that "helpless" she has to depend on everyone to take her somewhere, she has no job, 2 kids. I think these womens shelters are set up to where they help you get your life together. My sister thinks its gonna be some kind of soup kitchen or something. But my one friend said all they did was put you in a room with another mother and her kids like room mates and you help each other out...you use your food stamps to buy groceries, you help each other babysit while the other works. The organiztion helps you to save your money, then after a while you get your own place. You should call around and don't be like my sister and think you are too good to ask for help.

  • Welfare often gives emergency assistance and many other groups do too. Section 8 does not give emergency as far as I know and they have a VERY long waiting list in most places.
