I just realized that I put a cup of quick cooking barley in some soup, and they expired 4/09

Ugh. And its a huge pot of soup, it says 'best before 4/10/09' we won't get sick, will we?

  • no it just won't have the best flavor it might be somewhat stale, and have less nutrition but it shouldn't make you sick

  • That is a Best if used by date. Many items have a longer shelf life than the Best if used by date. There are even stores that sell "expired" items. It's fine.

  • It depends on how it was stored. If you know you had the box and it was stored well then I wouldn't worry. If you had the box and don't have AC and it has been exposed to high summer temps and humidity I would be a little more concerned about feeding it to young kids.

  • you should be fine.

if it looked normal, don't worry.

you would have noticed it if it had really gone bad.

  • no. They just had a thing on the news the other day that expiration dates are a big pile of crap. They have no guide lines to base the "date" on. They tell you to use your common sense. If the milk or meat smells bad, looks bad. Rice and oats can last years. Bread wont be as "fresh" and soft, but just so it's not molded. But you can pick that part off and still be fine. All cheese is molded anyway. Your fine honey! :)
