My docotor told me to give my almost 6 month old honey for his cough. I did not know it can cause botulism. I don't know what to do! Any advise?

When can my baby eat honey?

Although honey seems like a wholesome and natural food to give your infant, don't do it until after she's at least 12 months old. Honey can contain spores of a bacterium called Clostridium botulinum, which can germinate in a baby's immature digestive system and cause infant botulism, a rare but potentially fatal illness.

  • I wouldn't give it. I would sit in the bathroom with the hot shower going. But I wouldn't give honey.

  • are u sure he didnt say "caro syrup" it has the same consistancy, and its an old "wives tale" remedy. dont give him the honey tho. hot shower, saline nose drops, and keeping him ellivated would be the best thing for him. (the caro syrup does work even tho i was scared to use it. my mil gave it to my dd, and it worked. but i would only use it if u are desperate)

  • its safe....you can get botulism from soup too but only if its been sitting out for years....get some billybee brand honey...its well packaged and completely safe....i'm pregnant right now and ive been eating it every night for my sore throats...my baby is just fine. the doc knows what he's talking about

  • honey for a 6 month old? get a new doctor. dont do honey. if you already have, then just dont do it again. get a cool mist humidifer, let him breath steam from a hot shower, prop him up in his crib, use ocean nasal drops. good luck. my 5 month old and 19 month old are sick too ! :( it stinks!!!!!

  • dont give him honey. its very dangerous due to the fact that its not "clean" .. babies cannot have honey until there over 1. i didnt even give my son any until her was almost 2. try letting him breath the steam from a hot shower just dont sit in there to long. or try nose drops. i had a docter once tell me to give my son (at the time he was 11 mths) childrens cough tylonel. i switched drs.

  • if your doctor thinks your child may have allergies then they may suggest you see an allergy specialist and they may say local honey is okay because that would help with the allergies in the air. Only local honey from your area though, just any ole honey wont work

  • FYI, Karo syrup carries the same risk as honey. OP, I'd not give it.
