to cake or not to cake?

my baby's first birthday is coming up and i've been procrastinating on solid food. when given puffs or banana or the occasional baby food or big people sample, she gobbles it up like a little piggy so i know that's what she'll do with her cake. i want to give her one, but without much food experience will all that sugar be too hard on her tummy??

  • Let her have cake. Cupcakes are perfect for little ones. You could substitute unsweetened whipped cream for frosting to significantly cut the sugar factor.

  • In the 'What To Expect When You Are Expecting book series there is a great baby's first cake recipe(it's sweetened with apple sauce if I am not mistaken)they probably have a couple of the book at the library or you or a friend may have a copy.

  • We don't do a real cake for the first birthday. My kids start solids much later than most, and I don't think they're ready. I made this decision after attending 3 birthday parties in a row where the birthday kid vomited after eating their little piece of cake. I made mine little apple sauce cakes, that didn't have a lot of added sugar and things (of course, apples have sugar!). Mine fared much better. Most kids parents are already feeding them absolutely everything, and for them, I doubt the cake bothers them at all.

  • Mom, mom ,mom let the baby have a cupcake or something. I can't believe you don't give your child solids. Solids should have been introduced at 10 months depending on how many teeth. Starting out with soft foods such as mashed or creamed potato, rice, stuffing with nothing in it.. so forth. You can mix some solids with baby food that is more for older kids if the child doesn't have all her/ his teeth. Let that baby have a cupcake mom.
