How long before a poop?

My son has not had a bowel movement in about a week, so the doctor recommended taking his temperature rectally to see if that would stimulate anything. Has anyone had to do this before? How long did it take for your child to poop after you took his temp?

  • bf or ff? A breastfed baby can go a week sometimes up to ten days without a poop and not be constipated.

  • If he's Breast fed then it is all fine - they can poop 10 times a day or once a fortnight. If formula, is he uncomfortable? This is the second time I've seen the idea of the rectal thermometer on CM, have never heard of it before. Be very very careful doing that, you can cause awful damage very easily. You haven't said an age, but if he is eating solids at all, then instead of rice cereal, give him mashed pear, or get a prune, soak it in hot water to plump it up. Mash the inside pulp and add it to rice cereal. Be sure his fluid intake is good, either water or extra breast feeds, don't give extra formula

  • It is not unusual or harmful for a breastfed baby to go more than a week without a bowel movement.

  • Insane. if you want child to poo poo, give him apple or prune juice, let him sit in warm water or warm towel on his belly. Sounds as if he needs to eat more fruits and veggies and he will be regular for sure. He will be okay. Just try these things I mentioned above.
