What exactly does a "pain management" Dr. do?

I am seeing a "pain management" specialist tomorrow. He will decide the proper pain medication for my degenerative disc disease. That is, in a nutshell, all I really know about this kind of doctor. But I can't imagine that a doctor could make an entire career out of simply prescribing pain medications. So what else do these doctors specialize in?

  • They can also send you to PT and prescribe a TENS unit as well. For many it's a life saver!!! I worked in a PT clinic as an Athletic Trainer and we dealt with pain mngt doc's.... there are many avenues for pain management. This doc specializes in finding the right combination to treat your specific pain.

  • Usually they're anesthesiologists and they try to find ways to treat pain. Besides pills, they can do steroids and cortisone injections. My husband has had several series of injections for his back problems.

  • BTW...DH's doc does have some patients who cannot do anything but take meds...and they're on literally hundreds a day!

  • the government has cracked down ***HARD CORE*** on pain docs. If he prescribes you a narcotic on the 1st visit, don't get too comfortable, he'll likely be shut down in a year. Unless you're an extreme case they generally want to establish at least a FEW visits w/ you before controlled substances are discussed.

Also you cannot just be "In pain".... your MRIs, xrays, etc etc etc must show something really truly wrong that can be pin pointed/verified or else they generally wont risk their license on a stranger

be prepared for a possible discogram, facet injections, steroids.
