Shutting off Baby monitor at night?

To explain.... our room is connected to my daughter's room so we are in ear shot of everything. We have the baby monitor as well but it is so good it let's me hear EVERYTHING even with volume on low, including each breath she takes (which is not a bad thing of course), but lately my husband and I are jumping at every sound she makes, and sometimes we think she is hungry (she is tossing, grunting and slightly wimpering) and go make a bottle at night to come back and find her fast asleep because she was just having a dream or tossing a little. We thought we would turn off the monitor and when she cried out for food showing she is really hungry, we would race to feed her. We are not trying to be bad parents we are just trying not to disturb her when she is really sleeping and trying to get sleep ourselves. Because we are right next to her, we will hear any crying. Is that a bad idea? She is nine weeks and bottlefed.

  • I do the same thing..i have an 8 week old daughter and her room is right next to ours..i am a light sleeper so when she cries i can get up in a snap. As long as you dont think you will sleep through her hunger cries then you should be fine :)

  • Turn it off!...LOL...you need your rest and so does she. If youre right there, you will hear her if she stirs enough to know she needs something. Save the monitor for when shes napping and youre in the other room. Congrats on your sweet baby!

  • Turn it off. You'll get used to the different cries and know when you need to run in and when she's just settling back to sleep. My dd still wakes up and fusses at 16 months for a minutes and goes right back to sleep. She's two rooms down and I hear here fine. We just use the monitors for naps so we can do yard work or visit the neighbors for a bit.

  • As long as you can hear her turn it off. It is hard for me too because the baby is in my room so I hve trouble deciding if she is hungy or just having a bad dream.

  • I didn't get a baby monitor cause at the time of my pregnancy, we lived in a one bedroom apartment. We moved shortly after I had or son into a two bedroom and the rooms are like this [ BR] _______ [BR]. At first, I worried about not being able to hear him, but if he needs something, I promise she will let you know. Plus (for myself) being a mom has turned me into a super hearer. I can hear him at the slightest whimper from rooms away && I'm sure you'll get this magic power after getting use to not having the baby monitor.

  • if you can hear her well enough without it, why use the monitor?
I was thinking of turning mine off to get him to put himself back to sleep at night (he'll be 2 in november) but im too nervous that i wont wake up when he gets up in the morning and he'll be upstairs whining. My bedroom is downstairs and my son is upstairs.
