What do birds eat in the winter in cold states? I see cardinals, sparrows, and chickadees year round here in WI. I know they don't store stuff like squirrels....

  • There are bushes that produce winter berries, they find remains left behind to pick through from squirrels, there are bird feeders, and many times they go without eating for awhile.

  • Well, here we feed the birds. But for those areas without many bird feeders, they find pinecones, sweet gum balls, and other seed bearing cones and eat the seeds. They still dig for bugs in dead wood and in the ground.
