  • It doesn't. Humpty Dumpty started as a riddle back in the early 1800's--ie" what is something that if it broke could not be put back together? Answer: An egg. And the egg "character" eventually evolved to illustrate the riddle.

  • well doesnt he look like an egg?? if not an egg, what else looks like an egg, falls, and cannot be put back together/ an EGG! ITS COMMON SENCE.

  • I actually wondered about that as a kid. Yes, the illustration is usually and egg, but nowhere in the nursery rhyme is he an egg (or a "he" for that matter). I mean, why would an egg sit on a wall. And why on earth would all the King's horses and men work so hard to put an egg back together. Wouldn't they have more pressing issues at hand? But really, do any nursery rhymes make sense?
