Do you help your kids when they ask for help doing something you KNOW they can do?

Just wondering how this works for other people. I usually don't help my son (for instance) when he asks for help turning on the bathroom light. He knows how, and I am usually working when this request what do you do, or would you do in a case like that?

  • I tell mine that they know how to do and don't need help.

  • sounds like he wants you home?

I always would say things in a funny way, so they would laugh and do it. I never worked when they where young, kids just like mom around to help. We make them feel more confident.

  • I tell my kids that I know they can do it and I'm not helping them if after a while they still need help then I will go help them but they usually end up doing it themselves

  • Nope I tell her she's perfectly capable of doing it. She doesn't need my help and I haven't raised her to be lazy. She normally whines a bit then does it.

  • I help my daughter no matter what.

  • Only if they truly seem to be struggling with something. Otherwise they do it themselves if they know how.

  • Nope. Even if she can't really do something, I tell her ways she can do it herself, and she follows through.

  • It depends, sometimes kids just have a rough day and want some help, it really has nothing to do with needing help, so if I am not busy I will help, if I am busy I ask them to keep trying until I can help them, usually by the time I can help them they have done it themselves. I never just tell them no I won't help.

  • It depends on a couple of things... like luckysevenwow said, sometimes they are just having a rough day and I'm ok with helping then. Another thing is what we are doing at the time. Take his shoes for example, I know my son can tie his shoes. In the mornings when we need to hurry up and get out the door, I tend to tie them myself but if we are just going to go out and play or something then he does the tying.
