Diluted apple juice at 5 months

I am thinking about giving my 5 month old some diluted apple juice. Think it is ok to do at 5 months? Maybe 1 part juice, 3 parts water?

  • Apple juice triggers acid reflux (actually used by a lot of doctors to test for it), and at that age it has ZERO nutritional value. The ONLY things your baby needs right now are breastmilk/formula & lots of love.

  • Any reason why? It's not necessary. I wouldn't give anything besides breast milk or formula until they're on solids, and at that time, I'd offer water with solid meals.

  • Diluted juice is sugar water. Give your child water, to help her develop the healthy habit.

We introduced juice at three, as an occasional treat.

With the rampant childhood obesity, you need to be conservative with nutrition.

  • Babies don't need juice and it can cause digestive problems. They can have water with their meals. Water is what babies and toddlers should get used to drinking.

The AAP is against juice. They think it would be better if kids didn't have juice at all. If babies or toddlers are given juice it should be limited to 3-4 oz. They have a whole list of reason including kids that drink juice get too many calories and are more likely to be overweight.

  • Juice is unnecessary and mostly all sugar. And really, water by itself shouldn't be given at this age, but maybe 1 or 2 oz. Babies don't need anything but breast milk or formula at this age.

  • Thanks, everyone, for the great responses! I don't think I will give him juice quite yet.

  • My dd pediatrician said to give my dd pear juice instead of apple juice. She experienced severe constipation after she turned 3 months. So we did half pear juice and half water. She loved it. she is 5 now and still loves pears!

  • Our dr said not until after 6 months because their little kidneys sometimes can't handle the excess fluid which leads to other problems like imbalances of certain things like potassium, sodium etc. By 6 mon they're a little more mature.
Anyways, we started our daughter half juice half water about 6 mon. She loved it.
